AGADA TANTRA

Ayurveda is an ancient medical system which deals with the science of life. Ayurvedic science is so elaborate and vast that it is divided in to eight branches and each branch is specialised in particular treatment.

Agada Tantra is one among the Ashtanga of Ayurveda, which includes the science of poison. Literally gada means diseases and agada means any agent which makes the body free from diseases. The term ‘Agada’ is used specifically for the branch of medicine dealing with toxicology, description of different types of poisons and their antidotes.

Agada Tantra is also named as – Visha tantra, Damshtra chikitsa, visha vaidyaka etc.

Agada Tantra describes two types of poisons – Natural and Artificial. The Natural poison is classified as inanimate (sthavara) and animate (Jangama). Among the inanimate poison those of plant origine and toxic minerals, metals found in earth. Among the animate poison include bites of animals, scorpion, insect, snake etc. Artificial poisons are prepared by combining various kinds of animate and inanimate poisons. Intoxication could be from various sources including plants, birds, insects, animals and reptiles etc. Agada Tantra offers diagnosis and specific treatment for each category.

The Department of Agata Tantra consist of Agada museum which is arranged with different types of specimens – include plants (poisonous and anti-poisonous), snakes, different types of insects, mineral poisons etc. Models of different types of weapons and photographs of medico-legal importance and different types of insects bites are on display. In the department practical training are given in identification, signs, symptoms and management of various vegetable and animal poisons and also various of skin diseases.
